XLR connections and Phantom Power are ONLY for use with a Microphone. 48V Phantom Power should NEVER be applied to any Line or Instrument level outputs and can damage both the Focusrite and other units. The Mic Pre is not designed to accept these levels and doing so could produce poor quality sound, distortion or in some cases damage the units. What do you think? Someone had suggested doing it the other way around, but it feels kinds of odd to me routing a mix through line level outputs when you have balanced outputs available. Would this be the best way to route it? There are also Alt Outs on the ZED but I thought they would be better suited for monitors. I am a bit skeptical about the USB send/return (and have read about a couple of issues with it on here), so what I am thinking of doing is routing all of the outputs on the Saffire directly to the individual ZED channels for live mix downs and bounces to tape, and, for tracking to digital, going through the main outs (XLR) into the main inputs on the Saffire (combo jacks). I would be switching back and forth between outputs going to the 4-track and to the interface. At the moment I am currently tracking to either a Tascam Portastudio 424 or directly to Logic via a Focusrite Saffire Pro 24. I am about to order an Allen & Heath Zed 14 as a center piece for my small set-up.
